Netflix vs Chapelle

Before Netflix took the initiative to stream Chapelle’s Show on their platform, Chapelle had a deal with them in 2016, allowing Chapelle to release his specials exclusively on Netflix. However, Chapelle noticed that Netflix also obtained the rights to stream Chapelle’s Show for the platform, but that left Chapelle “furious.”

When Chapelle found out about his show that he worked on specifically for Comedy Central (ViacomCBS) was on Netflix, he called aggressively called Netflix stating that it made him feel bad. After the call, Netflix took action to remove Chapelle’s Show from their platform so Chapelle could feel better. Chapelle expressed warm feelings with Netflix as they handled the situation calmly, although this was for a point that made Chapelle think they did something that might be wrong.

The Fate of Chapelle’s Show

Dave Chapelle hosted the Chapelle’s Show for 3 seasons, from 2003 to 2006, meaning the show ended over a decade ago. The star left the show after signing a $50 million deal with Comedy Central in 2005. After he left the show, Chapelle claimed he never received another penny afterward.

According to Chapelle, it was in ViacomCBS’s right to not pay him afterward due to the contract he signed. However, the morality of the decision is in question. Chapelle said he found out that these major programming platforms are streaming his work without his knowledge nor consent, which is perfectly legal because of the contract that was signed beforehand. Fans commented on the Instagram video released by Chapelle stating that the moral decision is wrong, where Chapelle also agreed with the fans. After Chapelle communicated with his agent regarding the matter, the agent said there is nothing they can do.
